You can become a CASA volunteer if you:
  • Are a mature, responsible adult, at least 21 years of age
  • Have the time to commit (approximately 3-15 hours monthly and if possible for at least a one year period)
  • Care about children and have a real desire to advocate for their best interests
  • Can talk to people who are having problems

Minimum requirements to become a CASA volunteer:

  • Participate in an interview
  • Provide a copy of a valid driver's license and current auto insurance
  • Complete an application and three reference letters
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Pass a Department of Family and Protective Services background check
  • Participate and complete the initial thirty hour training curriculum
  • Be administered an Oath of Confidentiality by a Judge

More about CASA volunteer training:

To become a CASA volunteer, thirty hours of initial training is required.  The training includes the following topics:  the foster care system, the court system, advocacy of children in need, cultural sensitivity training, the effects of abuse on children, etc.

Training hours are broken down as follows:  # Classroom hours + 1 hour for interview + 7.5 hours for homework assignment  + # hands-on training (case related observation) = 30 hours (This will vary according to the training curriculum the trainee signs up for)
